Belcourt Castle (1891-1894) is a 60-room mansion designed by Richard Morris Hunt for a bachelor Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont, who inherited 60 million dollars from his father August Belmont, American Rothschild banking representative. In 1896 Oliver Belmont married Alva Smith Vanderbilt, just divorced from William K. Vanderbilt, Belmont’s friend and business partner.
Oliver died in 1908 and Alva, with architect John Russell Pope, redesigned the first floor. She resided in Belcourt summers on and off until her death in 1933. The Hon. Perry Belmont, Oliver’s brother, sold Belcourt, all of the land and original Belmont furnishings in 1940. The Tinney Family brought the castle to life in 1956 after 16 years unoccupied. They furnished it with their collections of antiques and art treasures from 37 Newport mansions and 33 countries around the world.
Belcourt Castle is the only Newport museum house with the owner, Mrs. Donald Tinney, in residence. She often greets visitors when she is home.
